Anyone who claimed tax credits during 2017/2018 and received renewal forms from HMRC must complete them by 31st July so that payments do not stop.
What are tax credits?
Tax credits are state benefits that can provide extra money to people responsible for children, disabled workers and other workers on lower incomes. There are two types of credit - child tax, and working tax.
The amount of tax credit you get is initially based on your current circumstances and income during the last tax year. Just over 4m families received tax credits in 2016/17, with about 1.65m in work.
What if I haven't received a pack?
If you claimed tax credits last year, you should already have received your renewal pack. If you have not, you are advised to contact HMRC.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
If you miss the deadline, your tax credit payments will stop, you'll receive a statement and have to pay back any tax credits received since 6 April 2018.
How do I renew?
You can renew online, phone or post on the Gov.UK website.
If you own an Amazon Alexa, you can ask "Open HMRC" for help and information relating to renewing tax credits. No personal details are stored, and you cannot renew the credits, but you can access useful information.
